Paaras Abbas is a textile artist and anthropologist whose work examines themes of repair, rootedness and social justice, through ethnographic storytelling, printmaking and needlework.
Paaras’ practice is an ongoing exploration of craft heritage and sustainable practices, observed and learnt from artisans in Pakistan.
Paaras processes natural dyes from food waste, homegrown and foraged plants, to create original lino prints and patchwork collage artworks.
Her practice is socially-engaged, and she is experienced in facilitating a range of workshops to beginners: natural dye, earth pigment, block print eco print, paper making, creative needlework, and mending. Her spirit of curiosity and exploration creates a relaxed and safe environment for participants to play and experiment with colours and designs. Learners have remarked feeling like a child again and unlocking their creativity.
Paaras has conducted sustainable textile craft workshops for a range of audiences, independently and through organisations including The British Library, CARAS refugee charity, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, Staffordshire St, Ahista Stories, Daytimers, Rich Mix, and Sunnyjar eco hub.
