This bird-shaped kite was crafted in Paaras’s garden studio in May 2024; she used a mixture of her own naturally dyed fabrics (using onion skins, marigolds, eucalyptus, cochineal, avocado, Colourfix bacterial pigment, and more) and scrap fabric and offcuts saved from her own block-printed and lino-printed work, and others including Peckham Keffiyeh. She hand-embroidered over sections of the kite, inspired by Chilean arpilleras made by women in exile during Pinochet’s government.
This work was inspired by Rebeka Ryvola’s artwork ‘Our Liberation Is Interwoven’ and Fannie Lou Hamer, whose words ‘Nobody is free until we are all free’ have been selected as the title of the artwork.
Within this work, Paaras has explored themes around solidarity and the linked nature of our collective struggles, reflecting on ongoing genocides, climate crisis, the UK’s hostile environment, and global struggles for liberation.
On display permanently at Rich Mix in London.
